Hmmm... same problem after changing permissions.

Under my wife’s profile (the profile having the issue) she can open the HP scanner app but receives the error message when she clicks the scan button.

under my profile everything works perfectly.

This is the final straw for me and HP. Photo colour quality is terrible, despite using HP ink and paper, and now I can't use the scanner easily. Won't be getting another HP printer.

I tried most of the solutions suggested, but none of them worked.

However if you go to the App store and download the HP App from there it works fine.  It must be because it comes from there it is an approved source and it doesn't upset the security settings

Hi #BigCalum,

Which HP App are you referring to?

I have tried both: HP Easy Scan and HP Smart for Desktop.

Neither of them solve the problem in my case.

Thanks.

It was HP Smart v 12.9.0

Thank you so much Der_be.  Finally found someone that helped me resolve this issue.  Forever grateful.

I tried this fix on my Mac Pro (2013) under Big Sur to no avail. Changing the permissions as indicated was possible, but I am getting the same permissions message as before for HP Scanner 3.app when trying to use Apple Image Capture. This is also after a "restart" to make sure everything registered in the system properly. This issue also started for me right after the update to Big Sur - no problems with any scanning before that.

Thanks for sharing the error detail this is very useful.

I've had the same problem after updating from 11.3 to 11.5.1 and found a solution:

- Navigate to /Library/Image Capture/Devices

- Copy "HP Scanner 3" to your Desktop and alter the permissions for everyone and staff to "Read & Write".

- Delete the Original "HP Scanner 3" Plugin from Devices Folder

- Copy the "HP Scanner 3" with custom permission to Devices Folder

- Reopen Image Capture App

- Scanning should work now

Thanks @der_be for sharing the solution here. I see some users have resolved the problem using your solution.

I got some advice from @StretchMusic for this issue. Scanner 3 is an old outdated software. We suggest to uninstall it using HP Uninstaller and then install HP Smart or HP Easy Scan. Hope this works. Please let us know. Thanks everyone!
