Pagewide Pro 477dw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My printer carried out an automatic update this morning as it has done many times in the past. The touch screen said an update had been installed successfully, but when I pressed on OK to clear the message I could tell the screen was frozen

The power button was also totally unresponsive....so the only way to switch on and off was by disconnecting the power cord

I tried everything.....including the power cycling routine : Printer unplug / PC shutdown / Router Shutdown and Restart / Printer Restart. At this point the printer works okay in standalone mode. I can copy/scan and managed to print the network settings page

However the minute i restart my PC and it gets to the windows login page......the printer bricks itself again and the touchscreen stops working

I managed to reinstall the printer driver and windows 10 sees the printer, however when i go to print nothing happens and windows shows the very helpful message "Error"

Thankfully I have a friend who is a long time tech guru, and after 3 hours on Teamviewer he concluded that the instant the new firmware detected my wireless network its bricked itself. "Very very poor" was his comment

Thankfully he came up with the solution of removing all the driver software related to the 477dw and replacing it with the HP Universal Printer Driver. He also said to turn off the auto update and switch to notify only

Im self-employed and was in full on panic-mode when my (previously faultless) printer turned into a giant paperweight. I honestly think this update has got a glaring bug in it somewhere

Will keep checking these forums to see if others start reporing issues (have seen one so far with same symptoms)

The same thing happened to me. I have it on our local area network. It comes up completely frozen. I am trying to connect with a USB cable. No response so far. A lot of people rely on this printer. It is in a public library where I am the IT guy.

UPDATE: Kudos to Repairatrooper. The recommended fix worked for me.

mine too at 29.Sept

connected to local network. Screen not responding, shows a yellow sign on display at the network icon.

Website not accessible. Touchscreen not responding. Power-Button not responding.

If i plug off the network-cable before powering, touchscreen is responding, and at the time the ethernet is plugged in back, the priner stops responding again.

3 of my customer units were affected on Thursday and Friday. Solution I found that works is this:

The older firmware from May is still posted on the website. What I have found has worked on other devices with this issue is to extract the .FUL2 file from the download using a program like 7-zip and copy that file on to a usb pen drive. Disconnect any ethernet cables and turn off your WIFI if the printer is connecting to that. Insert the drive into the usb port by the control panel. Start the device and when it comes to ready there should be an icon for USB, select that and there should be an option for firmware upgrade. It can take some time for it to recognize, one unit I had to leave for about 20 minutes before the option became visible. Once the upgrade icon is visible, touch it to downgrade the firmware. Once done, make sure to disable automatic updates on the machine so that the update does not apply again.

Excellent advice after a couple of frustrating days.   It did take a minute for the update button to appear.  Followed instruction in post and turned off automatic updates before turning wifi back on.  All is working now. THANKS!

It's working, many thanks!

This worked for me

But.....

I had to go into the hidden 'enable/disable' menu to activate the 'Firmware Update' option.  The hidden menu is accessed by pressing home-back-home-back (the buttons aren't visible but they respond anyway).  Then select 'Enable Disable Menu' and scroll down an make sure 'Firmware Update' is switched on.
