I was able to use the following procedure to reset the printer and get it back to the hpsmart.com/setup screen so I could try setup and activation again.  I hope this helps save you some time and lots of frustration.

 

Step 1: Power Off, then Power On with this key sequence

Hold OK and X buttons while restarting. Keep holding down for 3 to 5 seconds after the HP logo appears. The, quickly press this sequence:

 

Left Arrow Right Arrow Left Arrow Left Arrow

 

Step 2: MFG Mode should appear on the LCD

MFG Mode appears on the printer's LCD screen Press the Right Arrow until MENU appears Press OK

 

Now go through the menu choices until you see OOBE Reset Press OK After 30 to 45 seconds, the LCD should say hpsmart.com/setup
