@petersontg,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

The estimated service life of lithium batteries is about two to three years with normal usage between about 300 to about 500 charge cycles. But since you haven't used your lithium battery at all, usage was not the reason your lithium battery went bad. It is difficult to provide the reason what caused your unused battery to die, but elevated storage temperatures would definitely shorten its shelf life.

In addition, stored lithium batteries should not sink below 2V/cell for any extensive period. Apart from triggering a sleep mode, it encourages the formation of copper passages, called shunts, which can elevate self-discharge. Subsequently charging the battery can cause the cells to become unstable, generate excessive heat or display other aberrations.  A lithium battery kept below 2V/cell for more than a week or that fails to normally recover its voltage after storage, as in your case, should be safely disposed of -meaning, recycled.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,
