I reinstalled the driver using the HP easy set up devise but it is now preventing me from printing PDFs - other formats ok. I get the message "can't open private/var/spool/cups/tmp/016575c4f6206" whihc sounds like some permissions are preventing this file format from communicating. Its a new thing which has happened as a result of reinstalling the printer software from HP website - which i did as part of trying to get the printer to communicate wirelessly with a new router... eventually done by using the wps.
any help to solve this would be amazing
I have googled and found nothing definitive on this and the option to print as an image as a work around is not possilbe as it is greyed out!

Welcome to the HP Support Community
Let's update the printer firmware and Mac software:
Restart the printer and the MAC
Then, follow the below steps to remove the printer and add the printer as AirPrint.
Step 1: Remove multiple printers from the printer list
Check for multiple devices in the Printers list, and then remove any extra entries other than one in idle status.
-
Search the Mac for Print, and then click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners in the list of results.
-
Find the printer names that match your printer from the list of devices.
Figure : Printers and Scanner window with multiple names of a printer in the list
-
If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button
at the bottom of the list. Leave one 'idle' printer in the list that matches your printer if available and use this printer as the Default printer.
-
Try printing again.
-
If the printer prints, you can stop troubleshooting.
-
If the printer remains offline or displays an error, continue to the next step.
-
Step 2: Delete the existing print queue and add the printer
Remove the printer queue from the list of printers, and then add it again. Doing so creates a new printing session.
-
Make sure your Mac is connected to the Internet.
-
In the Printers list, click your HP printer, and then click the Minus button
to delete it.
-
Click the Add button
.
-
Find and select the name of your printer from the Printer list, and then click Add to add your printer. Do not select an HP Fax driver.

-
Click Print Using or Use.
-
Select the name of your printer (if available) or AirPrint.
Figure : Menu showing AirPrint selected
Your new printer queue displays in the Printers list in an Idle status
.

-
Try printing PDF.
Keep me posted, how it goes!

Thanks Raj
I appreciate you getting back to me on this one - if I google issues there often seems to be a range of measures which is never a good sign and many suggesting what I should consider more technically involved approaches which to be honest feels like it has the potential to get me into even deeper trouble.
The issue has arrisen as a result of updating the driver for a fairly old HP printer - disabling the PDF printing facility . Apple think this is something to do with the HP interface with Adobe. They have given me a workaround to print from preview - but its not ideal. The printer is connected and prints anything thats not a PDF.
Is this an known issue? Is this printer now less supported as technology advances?
I am in the process of updating the operating system, which had a very recent update ready for install, so I was more or less up to date when the issue arose. If I need to I will go through the steps you describe below, but given I used your auto install and the printer is sort of working it feels like it might not add much?.

Just an afterthough Raj
when I was searching to update the printer two files were on the HP website for my hardware - the driver and firmware? I only hit one of these, and then only afterwards resorted to the auto set up function which took everything out of my hands.
It was a bit confusing at the time to have been presented with two downloads?
