I cannot get into "set printer preferences". I just get an error message "0x00007FFBE9FBA799 protection fault" and can't get any further.

Hi,
Please try following below version of the HP Print and Scan Doctor Utility, select your printer and follow the steps on screen:
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/patches/HPPSdr.exe
Once the PC restart, allow the utility to complete and check if you may see any difference then.
Please let me know if that helps,
Shlomi
