Hi @lanny8 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are trying to clean the printheads of your HP DeskJet 2742e All-In-One Printer, you can use the printer's built-in cleaning function through the HP Smart app. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you:
Prepare Your Printer:
- Make sure your printer is turned on and connected to your computer.
- Ensure there is enough paper in the input tray.
Open the HP Smart App:
- If you haven't installed it yet, download and install the HP Smart app from the HP Smart website.
Access Printer Settings:
- Open the HP Smart app and select your printer from the home screen.
- Click on "Printer Settings" or "Advanced Settings."
Run the Printhead Cleaning Utility:
- In the settings menu, look for a maintenance or troubleshooting option.
- Find and select the "Clean Printheads" option.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to start the cleaning process.
Print a Test Page:
- After the cleaning process is complete, print a test page to check if the issue is resolved.
- If the print quality is still poor, you may need to repeat the cleaning process a few times.
Manual Cleaning (if needed)
If the built-in cleaning does not resolve the issue, you can also try manual cleaning:
Gather Supplies:
- Lint-free cloth or paper towel
- Distilled water or printhead cleaning solution
Remove the Ink Cartridges:
- Turn on the printer and open the ink cartridge access door.
- Wait for the carriage to move to the center and become idle.
- Remove the ink cartridges from the carriage.
Clean the Printhead Contacts:
- Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water or printhead cleaning solution.
- Gently clean the electrical contacts on the ink cartridges and the printhead (the part inside the printer where the cartridges sit).
- Avoid touching the nozzles or the electrical contacts with your fingers.
Reinstall the Ink Cartridges:
- Allow the cleaned contacts to dry completely.
- Reinstall the ink cartridges and close the access door.
- Turn the printer back on and print a test page.

HP DeskJet 2600, 2700, 4100, 4800 printers - No black ink, wrong colors, other print quality issues
I hope this helps.
