I lost my faxing capabilities from the computer yesterday. Fixed the connection, but had to remove and reload software, both with the smart app and regular driver. Now, I cannot find the add or fax icon anywhere and cannot perform this activity. Unfortunately, I fax daily in my business, so this is crucial.

Hi @KCYAYA,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To restore the faxing capabilities on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw, follow these steps.
Verify Installation of Fax Drivers:
- Ensure that the fax drivers are installed along with the printer drivers. Sometimes, fax drivers are not installed by default.
Reinstall Printer Software:
- Uninstall the current printer software completely.
- Download the full feature software package from the HP Support page.
- Install the software, making sure to include the fax drivers and software during the installation process.
Add Fax Printer:
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Click on Add a printer and follow the instructions to add the fax printer. It should appear as a separate device named something like HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw Fax.
HP Smart App:
- Open the HP Smart app and ensure that the fax feature is enabled and set up correctly.
- In the HP Smart app, click on the printer, then look for the fax setup options. If you do not see it, reinstall the app and ensure you are using the latest version.
Use Windows Fax and Scan:
- Open Windows Fax and Scan from the Start menu.
- Set up a new fax account if prompted.
- Select New Fax to start composing your fax.
Check Fax Settings:
- Access the printer's embedded web server by entering the printer's IP address into a web browser.
- Navigate to the fax settings and ensure that everything is configured correctly, including the phone line settings and any required dialing prefixes.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
