what do i use to plug into mac book pro to office jet 4654 universal file cable doesnt work

A warm welcome to HP Support Community!

I believe you need a USB cable to connect the printer to Mac. HP Printer's typically use a USB AB cable, named for the plugs on each end. The USB-A end is a flat, rectangular plug; the USB-B end is a square plug with two curved edges, which goes into the printer. Instructions on how to connect and setup a printer using USB cable can be found here.
