I have a HP 6525 wired to a Mac.  Usually when I want to print something, I get a message on the screen that says "cannot locate printer" or something to that effect. The only way I have found around this is to disconnect the cable and then reinsert. Is there something I can do to prevent this annoyance?

By the way, an additional frustration for me is that usually when I find a solution online and go to implement it, it doesn't work on my computer.  For example it might say, go to the settings menu and select "choose," and there is no "choose option on my computer, so then I can't proceed.  I am also not a super-techy  person. I am not an idiot but definitely can get lost in all the jargon.

Thanks.

Let's try installing the HP print driver and then adding the printer, here is how to do it:

1.) Download and install HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for OS X from here.

2.) Click the Apple menu, then click System Preferences.

3.) Click Printers & Scanners, Print & Scan, or Print & Fax.

4.) Check if the name of your printer displays in the Printers list. If your printer is listed, click the name of your printer, then click the minus sign  to delete the printer.

5.) Click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer.

6.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, then select the name of your printer.

7.) Click Add to add the printer to the list.

8.) Try to print.

Thank you for being a part of HP Forums. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.

I understand you have to remove the printer USB cable and re-connect it, in order to print a document. Normally this happens due to a corrupted print driver, updating the Mac OS and then removing and re-adding the print driver may resolve the issue. Let's try these steps:

1.) Use the steps available here to update Mac OS.

2.) Click the Apple menu, then click System Preferences.

3.) Depending on your operating system version, click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners.

Example of the Printers & Scanners window

4.) Check if the name of your printer displays in the Printers list. If your printer is listed, click the name of your printer, then click the minus sign  to delete the printer.

5.) Click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer.

6.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, then select the name of your printer.

Select the name of your printer in the Use menu

7.) Click Add to add the printer to the list.

8.) Try to print.

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks for this.

I got to step 5 and then couldn't progress.  I deleted my printer, clicked on the "+" to add my printer back, and was presented with a box in which I could enter nothing.  So I went from having a possibly defective driver to no driver at all.  I don't know how to proceed.  Par for the course, really. As I said previously, instructions on how to fix these things never seem to work in my world.

I would appreciate any ideas.  In case this is relevant, my computer is a 21.5 inch IMac purchased in 2013, running OS 10.13.6.

You are welcome!

It's unfortunate that those steps failed to resolve the issue.

Have you tried connecting the printer USB cable to a different USB port on the PC?

Have you tried with a different USB cable?

Do you have a home WiFi network?

Let me know!

Thanks for continuing to try to help me.

I have not tried a different USB cable; I don't have one that fits into the printer.

I have used different ports on the computer but not in a systematic way. Occasionally I have unplugged the printer cable to make room for another device I wanted to attach, and then the printer ended up in another port.  I haven't kept track of how this might affect the connectivity of the printer.  I just changed it right now.

No home Wifi.  (That's another story)

And as I said, now I don't even have the driver I started with because I deleted it, on the assumption I could just reload it.

I am still mystified as to why the options on my computer are always different from the ones that others assume I will have.

Okay, I'm back printing now.  I installed the driver and it came up labeled "series 2," whereas the one I had deleted and thought was the proper one was "series 4." I don't understand this, but I went with series 2, which then appeared in the box when I pressed "+"; previously that box was blank and I couldn't type anything into it.  Then I was able to print a document.

Thanks a lot for your assistance. The real hope is that next time I try to print something, it will just work the first time.
