@Mac1123, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.
I see that you are not able to complete the printer driver installation on the Win 7 PC. Yes, you will have to select the country and input the Zip code which is the last step.
When it shows USA, you will also have a drop down arrow, click on that to see the list of countries. Once you select a country, the Zip code box will activate.
For assistance with printer setup, click here.
If the issue persists, follow the steps mentioned in this document - HP printer setup (Windows built-in driver)
Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.
Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

Hello Kumar0307,
Thanks for your response. Perhaps my info was not clear.
Your first link [printer setup] seems to be for unpacking and setting up a new machine. This is NOT a new machine, has been working for few years and updates have not caused a problem before.
Your second link goes to “Add a network printer to Windows” and “Add a USB-connected printer to Windows” - this printer has been connected to my computer for a few years already.
Also you say “Yes, you will have to select the country and input the Zip code which is the last step.
When it shows USA, you will also have a drop down arrow, click on that to see the list of countries. Once you select a country, the Zip code box will activate.”
But at the end where it asked for location, as I said, the ONLY options were “USA” or “Select Country”.
When I clicked on the drop down arrow - there was NO LIST of countries !!! as I expected. If there was, I could have picked the right one.
It would only show -
USA
Select Country
as I am not in USA – my ONLY other option was “Select Country” - which does not make sense.
Also I could not put anything in the zip code.... I don't know if it would allow our numbers [+letters] IF I could put my country in – as I could not choose any country.
It would NOT CLOSE nor allow me to finish it – it said “Installation complete” and also “Failed installation: “ !!!
As this is now about a week ago – I eventually had to use Task Manager to shut it down.
So -
1. the installation has failed, whatever that update is, has not happened
2. I don't know what went wrong - nor how to fix it
3. I don't know if this is going to happen again at the next update
4. WHY does the location NOT drop down a list of countries to choose??? - why did it only show "SELECT COUNTRY" ???
5. does the "zip code" allow foreign zip codes, IF you can choose your country???
Can you tell me what happened here? Why the location was faulty? and how would I get the update that I missed?
Thank you.
p.s. just before posting - I clicked on "preview" and it showed some RED MESSAGE at the top saying there was some faulty html showing !!! so the message has been changed!!! What on earth is that???

Thank you for the detailed info. The first link also shows how to install the printer.
The second link shows how to install a printer bypassing the HP driver.
Yes, the software will accept the alpha-numeric Zip code if the specific country is selected.
Now, in this case, you may either select the country as USA and enter any Zip code of a state in the US. This is only for HP study purpose. It will not affect the functionality of the printer.
Or, please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region for assistance via a remote session.
Follow the instructions below to reach them:
1) Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp
2) Select your product type below.
3) Enter the serial of your device.
4) Select the country from the drop-down.
5) Select the chat or get phone number options based on your preferences.
6) Fill out the webform and proceed further.
If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes, you may use this link to find the phone number of the regional HP Support team: HP Phone Assist Worldwide
This seems like a glitch in the software.
Keep me posted for any other assistance.

Yes, the software will accept the alpha-numeric Zip code if the specific country is selected. --Thank you for this info – I had already tried our postcode but it would not accept it - perhaps because I could not select the appropriate country.
Now, in this case, you may either select the country as USA and enter any Zip code of a state in the US. This is only for HP study purpose. It will not affect the functionality of the printer. -- I don't know any US postcode, but what is the point of entering a wrong postcode for “HP study purpose”?
If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes, you may use this link to find the phone number of the regional HP Support team: HP Phone Assist Worldwide --- at the beginning of the update, it detected the printer and I entered the serial number, and there did not seem to be any problem with that. Now you say it might be out of warranty, as I mentioned before it has been connected for a few years so it must be out of warranty, and yet the updates still arrive from time to time so that is surely not a barrier to these updates.
This seems like a glitch in the software. - which software? The update?
Or, please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region for assistance via a remote session.
Follow the instructions below to reach them:
1) Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp
2) Select your product type below.
3) Enter the serial of your device.
4) Select the country from the drop-down.
5) Select the chat or get phone number options based on your preferences.
6) Fill out the webform and proceed further.
1 – done
2 + 3 – system detected type and serial
4 – done
5 = 'need help' chat option clicked ….says TRY ASKING HP'S VIRTUAL AGENT
…. clicked on Virtual Agent “start now”
The other day when I tried this – the machine does not understand the problem.
Today – after only a few seconds it says 504 GATEWAY TIME-OUT !!!
So despite your instructions, it seems impossible to contact 'chat' here, hence why I was on the forum seeking assistance.
Now I am no further advanced a week later. Is there any way you can help me with this?
Thank you.
Again – your 'preview' shows a RED MESSAGE -
Correct the highlighted errors and try again.

Did you use this link- HP Phone Assist Worldwide to find the HP regional support team contact number?
If the printer is out of warranty, there may be a support fee.
I'm not sure what preview you are referring to, attach a picture of the same in your next post.
Keep me posted for any other assistance.
