recently had a new router and password now printer will not work I was directed to connect ethernet cable to printer but it will not fit

The reason for that is that your printer does not have an Ethernet port. It does have a Printer USB connection.
You will need to connect your Printer USB cable to the printer once you run the setup software again to change your SSID and password. Then it downloads the information to the printer. Do not connect the Printer USB cable until the software tell you to do so.

I do not think that I have an USB cable. Ishall have to go out and buy one. Where do I put the other end...the one tnat is not in the printer?When I run the softwear (I presume you mean put in the disc that came with the printer) do I have to remove the original softwear or can I put the disc in over the top of the old info. I do apologise for my ignorance Iam a78 year old novice

You will need a Printer USB cable like this.
The rerun the setup software again to connect your printer.
