Hi @monzo93,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are trying to install an HP Deskjet 5940 Printer, you can follow these steps to try to get it working with your computer:

1. Download Basic Driver:

updated drivers for the Deskjet 5940, you will need to use basic drivers available from Windows or the HP website. HP Deskjet 5940 Printer series Software and Driver

  • Windows Update:
    • Connect the printer to your computer via USB.
    • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
    • Click on Add a printer or scanner.
    • Windows will search for available printers. If it finds your Deskjet 5940, it may automatically install a basic driver from Windows Update.
  • HP Website (Legacy Drivers):
    • Visit the HP Support website and search for the Deskjet 5940 printer driver.
    • If there is no direct link to your printer model, try to download a basic or universal driver that matches your printer series (Deskjet 5900 series).

2. Install Basic or Universal Driver Manually:

If Windows does not automatically find and install a driver, or if there are no available drivers on the HP website:

  • Using Windows Built-in Drivers:
    • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Click on Add a printer.
    • Select Add a local printer.
    • Choose Use an existing port and select USB001 (Virtual Printer Port for USB).
    • Click Next, then select Windows Update.
    • After the update completes, search for HP in the printer manufacturers list.
    • Scroll through the list to see if the HP Deskjet 5900 series is available. Select it and complete the installation.
  • Using a Compatible Driver:
    • If the Deskjet 5940 is not listed, choose a similar driver, such as the HP Deskjet 990c or HP Deskjet 9800 series, which might be compatible with the Deskjet 5940.

3. Check Printer Functionality:

  • After the driver is installed, print a test page to ensure that the printer is working correctly.
  • If the printout is not as expected, you may need to adjust the driver settings or try another compatible driver.

4. Troubleshooting:

  • If the printer is not recognized or is not printing correctly, disconnect it and try connecting to another USB port.
  • Make sure the printer is turned on and properly connected.
  • Restart your computer and try the installation process again if necessary.
