Hi @Tomo81

Welcome to the HP support community.

To print from your Mac M1 Max (Sonoma 14.6.1) to an HP Color Laser MFP 178 NW, you'll generally need to ensure a few things are in place. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get your printer working with macOS Monterey (macOS 12.0) and the M1 Max chip:

1. Check Printer Compatibility with macOS 12 (Monterey) or macOS 14 (Sonoma):

HP printers, including the HP Color Laser MFP 178 NW, are generally supported by macOS without needing a specific driver. macOS typically includes basic drivers for many HP printers, so you don't always need to manually install drivers.

2. Connect Your Printer to Your Mac:

Wireless Connection: Ensure your HP printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Mac.

  1. On the printer's control panel, go to Network Setup or Wireless Settings and choose the Wi-Fi network you want to connect the printer to. Enter your Wi-Fi password.
  2. On your Mac, click the Apple menu > System Settings (or System Preferences in older macOS versions) > Printers & Scanners.
  3. Click the + button to add a printer. Your HP Color Laser MFP 178 NW should appear in the list of available printers if it’s correctly connected to the network.
  4. Select the printer and click Add.

USB Connection: If you're using a USB cable to connect your printer to your Mac, simply plug the printer into a USB port on your Mac. The printer should appear automatically in Printers & Scanners in the system settings.

3. Install HP Printer Drivers (if needed): Click here

  • Automatic Installation: macOS should automatically detect your HP printer and install the necessary drivers when you add the printer.
  • Manual Driver Installation (if automatic installation doesn’t work):
    1. Go to the HP Support page and search for the HP Color Laser MFP 178 NW.
    2. Download the latest drivers for your macOS version (ensure you're downloading for either macOS Monterey or macOS Sonoma, depending on the version you're using).
    3. Install the drivers by opening the downloaded file and following the on-screen instructions.

After installing the drivers, you may need to remove the printer from Printers & Scanners and re-add it.

5. Use HP Smart App (Optional):

HP offers an HP Smart app, which you can download from the Mac App Store. This app can help you manage your printer, check ink levels, and print documents more easily. It’s useful for HP printers and might give you additional functionality such as wireless printing from your Mac.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
