Welcome to the HP Community --

Product / Printer Model:  ?

Operating System:  ?

Software / Application:  ?

Connection Type:  ?

Content / File Type:  ?

Paper Size / Type: ?

Job type:  Default Paper Size

Without the printer model, the answer requires a bit of additional guessing.

What we can know --

There are generally several places to check and / or adjust the paper size and paper type, including one or more of the following:

  • Printer

and / or

  • EWS
  • Windows > Printing Preferences / Printer Properties
  • Print Settings (in job setup)
  • Word -- Document Scale options

Details / Examples

========================

Printer - Paper Settings

The first place might be on the printer -- assuming a full service touchscreen Print Control Panel that includes the Verify / Modify settings for Tray and Paper.

AND / OR

========================

Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to view / adjust the Tray and Paper / Paper > Trays settings.

Depending on the printer model and the flavor of EWS, there might also be a section for Print > Default Print Options OR a section for Preferences > Tray and Paper Management > Advanced > Settings for Default Paper and Tray

EWS - General Examples

EWS_Tray_and_Paper_DeskJet_4EWS_Tray_and_Paper_DeskJet_4

EWS_9135_Tray_and_Paper_9EWS_9135_Tray_and_Paper_9

EWS_9135_Print_Default_Print_Options_9EWS_9135_Print_Default_Print_Options_9

=================================

Windows - Printing Preferences

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners

Select your printer

Select Printing Preferences

Sub-Topic Save preferred print settings

NOTE

When called from within printing programs / software / applications, Printing Preferences might be called "Printer Properties" / "Shortcuts" / “More Settings” / “Properties” / "Printer Setup" / "Presets" or similar.

Windows 11

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners

Select Printer > Printing Preferences

Windows 10

Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners

Select Printer > Manage > Printing Preferences

Next

Tab Printing Shortcuts

Select / Highlight your preferred Shortcut

Click Apply > Click OK to exit

The shortcut left as "selected" when exiting Printing Preferences "sticks" until changed at a subsequent job.

Printer Properties

Set a Default for All Jobs.

Note that you should still check in your job configuration --

What?  A set Default is not "stick like glue no matter what".

Printer Properties > Advanced > Printing Defaults

Example - Printer Properties > Advanced

 Word – Document Scale

Trouble with labels and possibly with other documents that include mixed content types:

Document Scale

There is a setting in Word that will "scale" a document for Letter / A4 paper.

If you are having alignment issues with your document (for example, labels, bottom of page chopped), UNCHECK this setting.

When printing directly from within Word

Setup:

Word > FileOptions > Advanced

In Section Print (about 2/3 of the way down)

Check or UNCHECK "Scale content for A4 or 8.5 x 11" paper sizes

Click OK to save changes

Job Configuration

As best as can be done, the Paper Type must match the paper type set / adjusted in EWS (in the printer).

The Paper Size must be a match between the job setup and EWS  -- An exception would be if the job is granted access to a particular custom paper size form and EWS is only set to the word "Custom".

If the job setup balks because the Source (Tray) is set to some form of Automatic, Select the Tray.
