HP Office Jet Pro 6968. Printed fine one day. Next day no print at all. No error messages. Will not copy either.  scanner works okay. Changed cartridges, did  a printhead cleaning 3 times. Did locate a 3/4 inch by 1/4 inch extension spring laying in the bottom of case on right hand side of cartridges. Appeared to have been on a slider bar where cartridges home. replaced but with no luck. Cleaned a lot of black ink goop from right side of case. still no luck. An

Hi @bobfi,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 6968 is having a serious issue that may be related to both the hardware and possibly the internal components. Here's a more detailed troubleshooting process to help identify the root cause.

Spring and Ink Goop: The fact that you found a spring and ink residue inside the printer could indicate a mechanical or component issue. The spring you found may have come from an internal part that controls the movement of the cartridges or a nearby mechanism. Cleaning up ink goop is essential, but you should double-check if all the internal parts around the cartridges (like the carriage or slider bar) are functioning correctly.

Check the Cartridge Carriage Movement: Open the printer and manually inspect the cartridge carriage. When powered on, the carriage should move smoothly across the printer without obstruction. The spring you found may have disrupted the movement or alignment of the carriage. You might need to carefully align it or ensure that there are no other pieces of debris or damage.

Power Cycle and Reset: Perform a full reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it for 10 minutes.
  • After that time, plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Check to see if it prints or copies after this reset.

Perform a Printer Diagnostic:

  • From the printer's control panel, navigate to the "Printer Maintenance" or "Tools" section and look for an option like "Print Quality Report" or "Self-Test" to check if the printer can still print test pages.

Firmware Check: Ensure that the firmware is up to date. If possible, update it through the printer's menu or via the HP Smart app.

Manual Printhead Reseating: Even though you've done printhead cleaning, manually reseat the printhead by removing it and carefully placing it back in place. Ensure the contacts are clean and there is no dried ink blocking any of the printhead’s contacts.

Check for Error Codes: While you mentioned no error messages, sometimes the printer might not show visible warnings. Check the printer’s display for any hidden error codes or lights.

Check Internal Wiring: If you're comfortable with it, check the internal wiring of the printer, especially around the printhead area. Loose or disconnected wires could also be causing the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
