@apvit, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It seems you are encountering an issue where your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw printer displays a "Scanner in Use" error despite the scanner not being actively used. Here are some troubleshooting steps that may assist you in resolving this issue:

Check for Multiple Sessions:

  • Ensure no other applications or users are currently accessing the scanner. Sometimes software that uses the scanner may not properly release control.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Make sure your printer firmware is up-to-date. You can check for updates by visiting the HP Support site and looking for firmware updates for your printer model.

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Ensure that printer drivers are fully updated. You should download the latest drivers from the HP Support site specific to your printer model.

Uninstall and Reinstall HP Smart:

  • You've mentioned you've already done this, but ensure it’s done thoroughly:
    • Uninstall HP Smart and any other scanning software completely.
    • Reboot your laptop.
    • Reinstall the HP Smart app from the official HP website or app store.

Check Connection:

  • If you are connected via USB, ensure the cable is securely connected.
  • For network connections, make sure your printer is properly connected to your network and all network settings are correct.

Clear Print Queue:

  • Clear all jobs from the print queue. Sometimes stuck print jobs may cause errors with the scanner.

Check for Conflicting Software:

  • Ensure no other scanning software is installed that might interfere with the HP Smart app.

Power Cycle Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord, wait for 60 seconds, then reconnect and turn it back on.

Check for Software Conflicts:

  • Certain security software or firewall settings might interfere with scanner operation. Temporarily disable them to test.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
