HP Officejet J4680
macOS 10.13 High Sierra

I have a late model iMac with 16 GB of Ram running High Sierra 10.13.6 and an HP Officejet J4680 printer. Last printed about 2 weeks ago and it seemed okay. Last night it would not print. I have removed all printers and reinstalled. Have gone to Mac store to download printer drivers. They do not have one for my printer. In the system preferences printer box it says I have the J4680 and status is idle (green circle) If I try to print from word or mail the status shows as busy. The printer makes the normal noise picks up a page makes some more noise and kicks out a blank page. When I go to the HP utility and ask it to print a test page it prints the page and every thing looks ok.  The cartridges have 75%  ink levels. The printer is set as the default. I do not have another printer.  The printer is connected through a USB cable. It does have a wifi option and I have wifi in the house that works with my iPad. When I try HP Smart app to connect, it can't find the printer whether through wifi of the usb cable. If I try printing from word and look at print preview the text on the page shows up but it does not print.

If I try to add a printer the dialogue box in the name shows HP Officejet J4680, my location and under Use it has HP Officejet J4680.

Any suggestions?

Thank you

Powie

@Powie, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand your concern. There is no printer driver available on the HP Support site for this model printer to work on macOS 10.13. This printer is not AirPrint compatible too.

However, Gutenprint (formerly called Gimp-Print) provides open-source basic print drivers for many printers that would otherwise not be supported in Mac OS X. To see if your printer is supported, go to Gutenprint drivers for more information.

NOTE: Gutenprint drivers are not supported by HP or Apple.

If this does not help, I suggest you upgrade the printer. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Kumar,

Thank you for the response.

In my question I forgot to mention my  computer is a "late model 2009."

I have now managed to get the printer working.

I had to delete all of my printers. Turn the printer off and then turn the computer off for a minute ( a restart did not work). I then rebooted the computer and added the printer back in the System Preferences.  The driver it is using is listed as "HP Officejet Driver 4.0.8". For the moment it is working.

I will keep the printer upgrade in mind. I don't print a great deal and the printer itself works fine so it would be a shame to have to get rid of it.

Again, thank you.

Powie
