The latest HP firmware update (Oct 2020) has broken my printer.

Can someone please provide and older firmware for pre 2020? Or advise me how I can reset the device?

I fully believe from my research that HP have broken the printer purposefully in order to encourage further HP purchases and profits (Google: HP firmware update for ink/laser printers blocks third-party cartridges (Nov. 2020).

Considering everthing that is going on with the environment right now, the environmental impact of printers going to land fill is terrible. The fact that a company like HP is encouraging this is a disgrace.

@Octagon10, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

To assist you better, what is the issue with the printer?

Do you get any errors?

The older firmware is not available on the HP Support site. Also, the firmware would not corrupt the printer.

Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi Kumar. Thanks for your response. It only takes a simple Google search to learn that the firmware has purposefully corrupted the printer. HP claim it's a "security update" but this is very much not the case. In fact the company did something similar in 2017 which they were forced to backtrack on and release older firmware for a range of printers. Unfortunately mine is not in that list.

The error I'm getting is the "cartridge problem" message. They are definitely not damaged as I have two different sets of cartridges. One that was working perfectly before this firmware update.

Surely the old firmware should be somewhere? There has to be a full image that can be flashed to fix the printer.

Are you using HP ink cartridges?

Make sure the ink cartridges are properly inserted in the printer, you may refer to - Replace HP inkjet printer cartridges

Kindly perform the steps mentioned in this document - Ink cartridge errors

Only the current and updated firmware are available for download. We can perform a factory reset on the printer. However, that may not resolve this issue.

Keep me posted.

The cartridges are properly inserted.

No I'm not using HP cartridges, but that's not the point. Your firmware update purposefully blocked 3rd party ink suppliers. Pre this update evertyhing was working fine. When I purchased the printer there was nothing in the T&C's that said I could only use it with HP ink.

It's under-hand tactics from a company that only cares about profit and not its reputation.

Like your I'm sceptical whether a factory reset with reset the firmware. I think I'd need a full image to fix the device.

I understand your concern. Let me escalate this issue to the concerned team.

Please look for a private message from me requesting additional information. Keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

HP does not recommend the use of non-HP ink cartridges. It may or may not work. HP cannot guarantee its functionality.

I'll await to hear from you. I think the issue is my non-HP ink cartridges were working flawlessly before the firmware update. I'm not asking HP to guarantee functionality, jutst not to break previously working functionality. Let's face it, we all know what's going on here.

Anyway I'll wait to hear from you. Please keep this thread open until my issue is resolved. Thanks.
