Trying to connect new printer to my wifi using HP Smart on my iPhone.  It asks me to go to setting, wifi, and click on DIRECT-9E-HP OfficeJet 8020.  When I do, the next screen asks for password.  I use my regular wifi password, and my default router passwword, but neither work.  I cannot get any farther with set up.

The "Direct" in the name indicates you have (mistakenly?) connected the printer to Wi-Fi Direct.

Wi-Fi Direct is a direct wireless connection between the printer and the computer using the printer's Wireless radio.

Wi-Fi Direct is a direct wireless connection without the use of a network router.

Wi-Fi Direct useful if you don't have a network - Wi-Fi Direct is limited in scope and won't let you connect the printer to the network (printer connection to the network is required if you have enabled HP+).

If you do want to use Wi-Fi Direct, find the password:

Print the Network Configuration Page Report

1. From the Home screen, touch (Wireless) and then touch ( Settings ).
2. Touch Print Reports, and then touch Network Configuration Page or Wireless Test Report.

Don't want Wi-Fi Direct?

If the goal is to have full access to standard Wireless, you do not want to use Wi-Fi Direct.

Instead, you want to connect to your wireless network that is controlled by your router.

This is where you are able to use your wireless network password and connect to the printer's SSID network.

Switch Wi-Fi Direct OFF on the printer.

1. From the printer control panel, touch or swipe down the tab at the top of the screen to open the
Dashboard, and then touch (Wi-Fi Direct).
2. Touch ( Settings ).
3. If the display shows that Wi-Fi Direct is On, touch Wi-Fi Direct and then switch it OFF

NOTE:  Wi-Fi Direct can also be set / adjusted in the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Next,

Open the printer User Guide

Go to Page 168 for how to set the wireless back to network defaults

Section titled:  To restore the printer to the original network settings

Next,

The printer should now (again) be in Wireless setup mode.

Go to Page 29

Prepare and set up the Wireless.

This video shows how to connect the printer to your 5G network using the printer control panel:
