macOS 12.0 Monterey

I just purchased a smart tank 520 to replace my ink tank 415 that kept showing E4.

My Macbook air shows the new printer but when I click on print the icon comes up in the dock then disappears. the printer will not print.

Hi @CD116 ,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

If your HP Smart Tank 520 is recognized by your MacBook Air but won't print, and the print job disappears from the dock without completing, there may be an issue with the printer configuration or driver compatibility. Here's how to troubleshoot the problem:

1. Check Printer Connection

  • Ensure the printer is properly connected to your MacBook Air:
    • If using USB, verify the cable is securely connected.
    • If using Wi-Fi, make sure both your printer and MacBook Air are on the same network.

2. Remove and Re-Add the Printer

Sometimes, simply removing and re-adding the printer can resolve connection issues.

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Select your HP Smart Tank 520 printer, then click the “-” button to remove it.
  • Click the “+” button to add the printer back. Select the correct driver or use AirPrint if available.

3. Check for Driver Updates

  • Download and install the latest drivers for the HP Smart Tank 520 from the HP Support website.
  • Make sure you're using the correct driver for macOS. HP offers both full-featured and basic drivers. The full-featured option is preferred for complete functionality.

4. Reset Printing System

If the issue persists, try resetting the printing system:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Ctrl-click) in the printer list and select Reset printing system.
  • This will remove all printers from the list, so you will need to re-add the HP Smart Tank 520 afterward.

5. Ensure macOS is Up to Date

  • Check for any macOS updates under System Preferences > Software Update.
  • Sometimes macOS updates improve printer compatibility and resolve driver issues.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @CD116 ,

Please find the remaining steps below.

6. Try Printing Using AirPrint

  • If the HP drivers are causing issues, try using AirPrint instead of the HP driver.
  • When re-adding the printer, select AirPrint in the "Use" dropdown menu (if available).

7. Test Print from Another Application

  • Try printing from another application (e.g., Preview or Safari) to see if the problem is limited to a specific program.

8. Check Printer Queue and Restart Printer

  • Open the printer queue by clicking the printer icon in the dock after sending a print job.
  • See if the job is stuck or showing any errors.
  • Restart both the printer and your MacBook Air.

9. Check Printer Firmware

  • Ensure that your Smart Tank 520 is running the latest firmware. You can check for firmware updates via the HP Smart app or HP's support page.

10. Check for HP Easy Start Tool

  • Download and run the HP Easy Start tool from the HP website. This tool can guide you through properly setting up your printer on macOS.

Keep me posted for further assistance
