Hi @Davesampson

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet 6700 is connected to your router's 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band, while your HP laptop is connected to the 5 GHz band. While both bands operate on the same network (via the same router), they can sometimes have difficulty communicating with each other, especially if they are on separate bands. Here are several methods to resolve this issue without using an Ethernet cable:

1. Connect Both Devices to the Same Wi-Fi Band (2.4GHz or 5GHz)

One of the simplest ways to fix this issue is to ensure both your printer and laptop are on the same Wi-Fi band. Since the 2.4 GHz band has a wider range, it's usually the better option for connecting printers.

Option 1: Connect Both Devices to the 2.4 GHz Band

Step 1: Check your router settings. Most routers have a single network name (SSID) for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, but sometimes they are split into separate SSIDs. If they are split, make sure both the printer and the laptop are connected to the 2.4 GHz network.

Step 2:

  • On your laptop: Go to Settings > Wi-Fi, then select the 2.4 GHz network and connect.
  • On your printer: You can reconnect the printer to the 2.4 GHz network by either going into the printer’s control panel and selecting the Wi-Fi network or by running the HP wireless setup wizard via the printer’s menu.

Step 3: Once both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network (2.4 GHz), they should be able to communicate without issues.

Option 2: Connect Both Devices to the 5 GHz Band

If you want to keep the 5 GHz band for faster speeds, ensure both your laptop and printer are connected to the 5 GHz network (assuming your HP OfficeJet 6700 supports 5 GHz, which is unlikely, as it typically only supports 2.4 GHz).

If your printer cannot connect to the 5 GHz band (most likely, since the OfficeJet 6700 supports only 2.4 GHz), this option may not work unless you upgrade your printer to one that supports dual-band Wi-Fi.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
