Hi @ldykate3,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP 6400e printer is only printing in grayscale and there's no option for color printing when printing from Chrome, this could be due to several reasons. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Check Printer Settings in Chrome:
- Press Ctrl + P to open the print dialog in Chrome.:
- Click on More settings to expand the options:Look for a Color option and ensure it is set to Color instead of Black and white or Grayscale.
2. Check Printer Preferences:
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.Select your HP 6400e printer and click on Manage.
- Click on Printing preferences:In the printer preferences dialog, ensure that the color printing option is selected. This is typically found under the Paper/Quality or Color tab.Set the Color option to Color instead of Grayscale or Black and white.
- Click Apply and then OK to save the settings.
3. Update Printer Drivers:
- Visit the HP Support page and search for your HP 6400e printer model.Download and install the latest drivers for your printer.
- Uninstall the current printer driver from Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners by removing the device.
- Reinstall the printer using the latest drivers.
4. Check Application-Specific Settings:
- Some applications have their own print settings that override system settings. In Chrome, ensure that any extensions or plugins that affect printing are not set to print in grayscale.
5. Check Printer Firmware:
- Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer on the HP Support page.Download and install any available firmware updates.
6. Use HP Smart App:
- Install the HP Smart app from the Microsoft Store or the HP website:Use the HP Smart app to print a document and see if the color option is available.
7. Clear Print Queue:
- Sometimes a stuck print job can cause issues. Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.Select your printer and click on Open. queue.
- Cancel any pending print jobs and try printing again.
8. Reset Printer Settings:
- On the printer’s control panel, navigate to the settings or setup menu.
- Look for a Restore Factory Defaults or Reset All Settings option and confirm the reset.Reconfigure the printer and try printing again.
9. Check for Conflicting Software:
- Sometimes, other installed printer software can conflict with the current printer. Ensure that no other printer management software is causing issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day
