Hi @sjg7,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting the "Out of Paper" error message on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw could be due to various reasons, such as paper feed issues, driver problems, or sensor malfunctions. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issue:

1. Check the Paper Quality and Load:

  • Make sure you're using paper that meets the printer’s specifications, as low-quality paper or paper that's too thick or too thin can cause feeding issues.
  • Check that the paper is properly loaded, with no bent, wrinkled, or damaged pages.
  • Avoid overfilling the tray, and adjust the paper width and length guides so they lightly touch the edges of the paper.

2. Clean the Paper Feed Rollers:

  • The rollers inside the printer can get dusty or coated over time, leading to paper feed issues.
  • Turn off and unplug the printer, then open the access areas to locate the rollers. Clean them gently with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Allow the rollers to dry before turning the printer back on.

3. Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions:

  • Open the printer doors and trays to check for any small pieces of paper or foreign objects that might be stuck, especially near the paper path and rollers.

4. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  • An outdated or corrupted driver can sometimes trigger false error messages.
  • Go to the HP Support website to download the latest driver for your printer and operating system. Install the new driver after uninstalling the current one to ensure there are no conflicts.

5. Reset the Printer:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds, then reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on. Check if the error persists.

6. Printer Firmware Update: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date, as HP may release updates that address common issues. You can find firmware updates on the HP Support website.
