deskjet d2680
Microsoft Windows XP

I installed everything fine the first time, and seemed to get a normal test print.

However when I tried to print a text document it was skipping lines. Help suggested I remove the driver and re-install. I uninstalled all software, and uninstalled the printer from the device manager.  When the installation got to the part where it installs the printer, the computer said it detected the printer, but won't install it to the computer.  Any suggestions? It's an HP Deskjet D2680,  running windows XP.

Hey @steve108,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I see that you are having some issues with reinstalling your Deskjet 2680 on your Windows XP machine. Due to the age of your operating system, I can not guarantee we can get the printer to work, however I can provide "best effort" support.

To start, make sure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not a surge protector. Once done:

  1. Remove the USB cable from the back of the printer.
  2. Uninstall any software related to the printer from your PC.
  3. Click on Start and Run.
  4. Type in "cmd" (no quotes) and press Enter.
  5. In this window type in "msiexec /unregister" (no quotes) and press Enter.
  6. Type in "msiexec /regserver" (no quotes) and press Enter.
  7. Click on Start and Run.
  8. Type in "msconfig" (no quotes) and press Enter.
  9. Click on the Services tab.
  10. Click on Hide All by Microsoft.
  11. Click on Disable All.
  12. Click on the Start Up tab.
  13. Click on Disable All.
  14. Click on OK and restart your PC.
  15. Download and install the latest drivers by clicking on this link.

Please let me know if the results after following the above. If you are able to install, please click on Accept Solution. If you appreciate my help, please click on the thumbs up icon. Both icons are below this post.

Hey DocCottle - Appreciate the help. Unfortunately it didn't work. I'm just trying to keep this computer going until I start work again in August and can afford to upgrade the memory in another computer I have and can install windows 7 on that.  Thank you again and have a great day.

To DocCottle - I fixed the problem. I did a non-destructive recovery, and everything is working fine again. Again I appreciate you taking the time to help me.  Thank you and have a good day.
