When connecting my HP C309a to a Windows 11 computer via USB, it asks for the printer pass code (NOT pass word). I have tried every number on the printer, as well as 12345678 and every number on the Printer Status Report. HELP, please.

Hi @DRAMExpert1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

This is a great question and a common confusion with older HP printers like the Photosmart Premium Fax C309a when connecting via USB or wireless.

Why is it asking for a "Passcode"?

  • This is NOT a password for printing; it’s the Bluetooth or Wireless Direct pairing code.
  • Older HP models sometimes prompt for a passcode when:
    • Bluetooth is enabled.
    • Wireless Direct is active.
    • The printer is trying to pair as a device rather than just install via USB.

What is the Default HP Passcode?

  • For HP printers, the default pairing code is usually:
    • 000000 (six zeros)
    • Or 123456
  • If the printer shows a code on its display during setup, use that.

How to Fix This and Install on Windows 11

  1. Disable Bluetooth/Wireless Direct on Printer
    • On the printer control panel:
      • Go to Setup → Network Settings → Bluetooth/Wireless Direct → Off.
    • This prevents Windows from treating the printer as a Bluetooth device.

  2. Install Using HP App or Generic Driver
  3. Connect via USB
    • Plug in the printer via USB.
    • Windows should detect it and install it automatically.
    • If not, manually add:
      • Settings → Bluetooth & Devices → Printers & Scanners → Add Device.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
