Hi @Mylor,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A "printhead malfunction" error can be quite frustrating, especially if you’ve followed the installation steps and still see the error. Here’s a detailed guide to troubleshooting and resolving printhead issues with your HP Envy 5540:

1. Check Printhead Installation

  • Power off your printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait about 60 seconds.
  • Open the printer’s access door to access the printhead and ink cartridges.
  • Gently remove the ink cartridges from the printhead. Set them aside on a clean surface.
  • Carefully remove the printhead from its slot. You may need to release a latch or handle depending on your printer model.

Inspect the Printhead:

  • Check for any visible damage or obstruction in the printhead and the printer’s carriage.
  • Look for any tape or protective covers that might still be on the printhead.
  • Use a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab lightly dampened with distilled water to clean the contacts on the printhead and inside the printer where the printhead connects.
  • Carefully reinstall the printhead into its slot, ensuring it’s securely in place.
  • Reinsert the ink cartridges into the printhead.
  • Close the printer’s access door and plug it back in.
  • Power on the printer.

2. Check for Firmware Updates

Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve printhead issues.:

  • Visit the HP Support website and check for any available firmware updates for your printer model.
  • Follow the instructions to update the firmware if necessary.

3. Perform a Printhead Alignment

  • Open the printer software on your computer or use the printer’s control panel.
  • Look for a printhead alignment option and follow the on-screen instructions.

4. Perform a Printhead Cleaning

  • Open the printer software on your computer or use the printer’s control panel.
  • Select the option for printhead cleaning and follow the instructions.

5. Check for Printer Errors:

  • If there are any error codes or messages on the printer’s display, make a note of them.
  • Refer to your printer’s manual for specific troubleshooting steps related to the error codes.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
