@mjk40, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like you've already tried some troubleshooting steps. If your HP DeskJet 2710e is still printing faint or almost blank pages, there are a few steps you can try before considering replacing the ink cartridges. Here's a troubleshooting guide:

Check the Ink Levels Again

  • Ink levels: Even though you’ve checked the ink, ensure they’re not critically low. Sometimes the printer will still report ink being fine, but there may be enough air in the cartridges or printhead to affect quality.
  • You can use the HP Smart app or the printer's control panel to check the ink levels again, just to be sure.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear up any glitches that might be causing print issues.

Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • HP offers a dedicated troubleshooting tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor, which can help fix common printing issues.
  • Download and run the tool: HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  • It will automatically detect and fix issues such as low ink levels, printing problems, or miscommunication between the printer and computer.

Check the Ink Cartridge Slots

  • While you’ve cleaned the cartridge area, ensure that no debris (ink, paper dust, or other foreign particles) is inside the ink cartridge slots or around the contacts.
  • Clean the contacts with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water (not rubbing alcohol, which can be too harsh). Gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer.

Perform a Deep Cleaning (Printhead Cleaning)

  • Run the deep clean process from your printer’s control panel or via the HP Smart app.
  • On the printer: Go to the setup menu, select "Tools," then "Clean Printhead."
  • On the app: Choose "Printer Settings" > "Clean Printhead."
  • If your printer allows for it, select "Deep Clean" for a more thorough cleaning.
  • Repeat this process 2-3 times if necessary.

Manually Clean the Printhead

  • If your printer still has issues after a deep clean, the printhead might be severely clogged.
  • Turn off the printer and remove the ink cartridges.
  • Remove the printhead: For some printers, the printhead can be removed. If your model supports it, carefully remove the printhead assembly.
  • Clean the printhead: Use warm water or a printhead cleaning solution to gently soak the printhead for 5–10 minutes, then blot it with a lint-free cloth.
  • Reinstall the printhead and ink cartridges and try printing again.

Check for Firmware Updates

  • Sometimes issues are caused by bugs that can be fixed through firmware updates. Check for any available updates via the HP Smart app or the printer’s control panel.
  • To update: Go to the settings or printer menu, find "Update" or "Firmware" options, and check if there's an update available.

Try Different Paper

  • Ensure you are using the correct type and size of paper.
  • Poor print quality can also result from using incompatible paper that absorbs too much ink or isn’t feeding properly.

Print a Diagnostic Page

  • On your printer’s control panel, print a diagnostic page to check whether the issue is related to the printhead or cartridges.
  • The page will show if any lines are missing, which can help identify the problem.
  • If specific colors are missing, it could be a cartridge problem.

Test with Another Cartridge (if possible)

  • If you have access to a new or known working ink cartridge, try swapping out your current cartridges to test if the issue persists.
  • If the print quality improves with a new cartridge, the problem was likely a defective or dried-out cartridge.

Consider Replacing the Printhead or Cartridges

  • If you’ve cleaned and tested everything and the problem persists, it’s possible the printhead is damaged or worn out.
