How do I set the printer to a custom paper size? I use a Mac running Ventura 13.1. I got this printer because it says it can print down to 3x5 index cards as a "custom size" but there appears to be no way for me to set the paper size to that size on the printer.
This is really frustrating and I need to know if it can be done or if I need to return the printer.

Perhaps the following will help...
Try / Consider
Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to check what is available in Paper Sizes / Types.
If the paper size you want is not in the list,
Scroll to the end of the paper size list,
If the printer supports the option, Select paper size "Custom"
Assuming the Index card paper is within the Specifications > Paper Handling for card paper weight (163 to 200 g/m² (card)),
Lacking another option (in EWS > Tray and Paper),
If the option is available, consider selecting Paper Type = Plain Paper, Thick
EWS > HP Document / How-to
Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)
EWS – Browser – Tray and Paper Management
Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management
Model Dependent: Advanced section
Click Apply to save changes

Update - Add HP how-to document link
HP Document: HP Printers - Creating Custom Paper Sizes
Understood.
I was hoping that EWS Tray and Paper would include the paper size or at least the "custom" size option to alert the printer hardware of your paper size choice.
True - beyond the paper size setting in the printer, the rest of the setup is in your software / applications.
I do not have access to an example of HP Smart for your OS.
Yes - it does appear it should work.

Considering that it should work now, I can't see the option being changed later.
What?
My opinion is based on the indication in the Specifications that the custom paper size would be supported.
I do not have any access to your printer or your printer software to check how the task would be configured.
Try contacting HP Support -- while printer setup is not normally part of the basic hardware Warranty contract, there is generally a brief period of time when setup help is also available. The use of the word "generally" is deliberate -- I am on the other side of the planet from your location. Your options might be different.

Reminders - READ
- Case submission to HP Support is available to those whose devices registered and are still in Warranty.
- Some regions display phone / chat contact information only after the case is submitted online
- Not every issue is covered under the standard Hardware Warranty. Purchased Care Pack Warranties differ by contract.
- HP is not a "general" repair facility: Requests for out-of-warranty repairs are usually not accepted.
- If the problem is hardware, if your device is in Warranty, if your device is Registered, and you cannot submit your case to Support, let us know and we will forward a request.
Important
- HP Phone numbers you find on the Internet have likely been hijacked. Old HP phone numbers – those numbers no longer used by HP since the move to “online” case submissions – might have been taken over by thieves.
- Do not be a victim.
- Stay vigilant.
