Hi,

I have an Android 11 phone with HP Smart & the HP Print Service Plugins installed.

I turn on the printer and press the WiFi Direct button and turn on WiFi on my phone. After a few seconds they connect and I get a sold white dot on the printer to show the WiFi Direct is now connected. Also my phone shows the WiFi is now connected to the printer. I have no home WiFi network as I use mobile data for internet access.

In HP Smart I am logged into my account and I can see the printer online with the ink levels showing.

But when I try to print through HP Smart it complains that my WiFi is not setup.

Does this mean I can check the status of the printer through HP Smart but I can't actually do anything useful like print without a home WiFi network?

Thanks in advance

Richard

According to the documentation, what you say is true.

Wi-Fi Direct is an ad-hoc wireless connection between the printer and device.

Wi-Fi Direct is missing the "internet" access element (that is) available in a standard Wireless network connection.

Specifications / Requirements for HP Smart,

  • An HP printer that supports HP Smart

  • The printer is connected to a wireless network with internet access

  • A compatible mobile device or computer.

HP Smart (Mobile) - iOS and Android >>> Download, How-to, and FAQ

HP Printers - Using the HP Smart App (Android, Apple iOS)
