HP Deskjet 3054 All-in-One J610 Printer
macOS 10.15 Catalina

Hi, I have an HP Deskjet 3054 All-in-One J610 from way back in the early 2010s but it's always been good to us. We're trying to print a PDF and Word doc and we keep getting "filter failed" errors. I've even tried printing other things like screenshots but still getting the same error. We have updated our software to the latest Catalina on each of our Macbooks (Air and Pro), we have uninstalled and reinstalled the HP Drivers, and deleted and added the printer several times. I tried using HP Easy Start to see if there was an even more updated HP driver, but it is unable to find our device... even though we connect it using the USB cable.

I am about to pull my hair out trying to figure this out. Any support would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

The solution is to download (and install) this package (From HP FTP) which will update drivers AND THE CERTIFICATE:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-printer-essen...
The install takes a bit. Let it run, even if it seems like it stalled out!

It is NOT the same as the driver package, Easy Start, or Easy Admin other people are recommending.

If the link comes up blank, try right clicking and saving it. If you install this package and still have trouble, try restarting. Then go about uninstalling your printer and reinstalling USING THIS METHOD ONLY (NOT EASY START, NOT EASY ADMIN): Apple Logo (Upper Left of Screen)/System Preferences/Printers & Scanners. Then restart your computer.

If you still can't find the printer, install the 5.1 driver package from HP: https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US

Then restart and try to install again through the Printers & Scanners menu.

Easy Admin did nothing. Easy Startup did nothing. 5.1 drivers did nothing. This worked for me!

If this solved your issue, please thumbs up and mark as solved!

Thank you for your help.  I was able to get my Deskjet 3054 up and running again using your tip.  The certificate made all the difference.
