I need to change the printer settings, but the password that appears on the printer won't let me access HP Smart, and I need to recover the administrator password to be able to access the settings.

@dashrry, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

If you're unable to access the printer settings via HP Smart due to an unknown or forgotten administrator password, here are the steps you can follow to recover or reset it:

Option 1: Try the Default Administrator Credentials

Sometimes, the default credentials may not have been changed. Try the following:

  • Username: admin
  • Password: (leave blank) or try admin

If these don’t work, proceed to reset the printer.

Option 2: Restore Factory Settings (Resets Admin Password)

This will reset all custom settings including network configurations.

Steps:

  1. On the printer control panel, go to Settings.
  2. Navigate to General > Restore Factory Defaults.
  3. Confirm the reset when prompted.

Once the printer restarts, the admin password will be reset to default (usually blank), and you can reconfigure it via HP Smart or the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Accessing the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

After reset:

  1. Connect your PC to the same network as the printer.
  2. Find the printer’s IP address from the control panel.
  3. Enter the IP in a web browser to open the EWS.
  4. Go to Settings > Security > Administrator Settings to set a new password.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
