Have to reinstall printer, app asks for/doesn't recognize password. now what? Don't see option for changing password. Congratulations on being less than helpful -- silent, actually -- fixing a problem  caused by the internet, not me except i was using the internet.

Hello @rodger98, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP printer.

We appreciate the opportunity to assist you and are glad we could help work toward a resolution. We hope our support has been valuable.

To help us get started on resolving your issue, could you please let me know the printer's name and the model number along with the network setup of the HP device so that I can assist you further?

However, in the meantime, could you please try these troubleshooting steps and give us an update?

1. Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults

Refreshing the printer restores it to a clean state, clearing saved passwords and network settings for a smoother setup.

  • Touchscreen printers: Navigate to Setup / Service / Settings > Restore Defaults or Restore Factory Defaults.
  • Printers without a display: Turn the printer on, then press and hold the Cancel and Wireless (or Wireless + Power) buttons together for 5–10 seconds until the lights begin to blink.

2. Set Up Using Wi-Fi Direct

If the setup feels unresponsive, Wi-Fi Direct allows a quick and seamless connection.

  • Press the Wireless Direct button until a page prints with the network name (DIRECT-HP…) and password.
  • Connect your device to this network via Wi-Fi settings, then continue setup using the HP app or a web browser.

3. Check or Reset Admin Credentials

If prompted for an admin password:

  • Locate the 8-digit PIN on a label inside the printer (near the cartridges) or on the back/bottom.
  • You can also try using admin as both the username and password.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
