@rwevans, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

If your HP LaserJet Pro MFP 3101fdw keeps saying it "requires update" even after updating via HP Smart, follow these steps carefully to get past the loop:

1. Power Reset the Printer

With the printer on, unplug the power cable from the back.

Wait 60 seconds.

Plug it back in and turn it on.

2. Confirm Firmware is Truly Up to Date

Sometimes HP Smart shows “up to date” even if the printer hasn’t properly applied the update.

Manually update firmware:

Go to HP’s support site.

Search for “LaserJet Pro MFP 3101fdw”.

Download the latest firmware update utility (for Windows or Mac).

Run it with the printer connected via USB or Ethernet (Wi-Fi updates can sometimes fail silently).

3. Check Printer Control Panel

On the printer’s touchscreen, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.

Try checking for and installing updates directly from there.

4. Bypass Update Requirement

If you're stuck at a screen saying “Update Required” and can’t bypass it:

Try accessing Embedded Web Server (EWS):

Print a network configuration page (Settings > Reports).

Enter the printer's IP address into a web browser.

Navigate to Firmware Update or Web Services tab and complete update or disable Web Services temporarily.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
