Printer does not work. My printer has a bright red exclamation mark on the 'start' button at bottom of screen.  What is it?

Hi @BigEd19,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The bright red exclamation mark on your printer’s start button indicates a warning or error state—most commonly caused by driver issues, paper jams, low ink/toner, or a blocked print queue.

We request that you follow the steps to fix the issue:

Check the printer hardware

Open the printer and look for paper jams or misaligned cartridges.

Ensure ink/toner cartridges are properly seated.

Clear the print queue

Go to Control Panel → Devices and Printers → Your Printer → See What’s Printing.

Cancel all jobs, then restart the printer.

Update or reinstall drivers

Visit the Official HP® Support and download the latest drivers.

Uninstall the current driver before reinstalling.

Check connections

If using a USB, try a different port.

For Wi-Fi printers, reconnect to your network.

Restart both the printer and your PC.

Run Windows Troubleshooter

Go to Settings → Devices → Printers & Scanners → Troubleshoot.

Windows will attempt to detect and fix issues automatically.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
