I have a Color LaserJet MFP M283fdw. Is there a setting ON THE PRINTER (not user device setup) that can be set to cause the printer to print B&W/grayscale by default, only to print in color whhen user specifically requests color EACH time. I grow weary of using color toner to make black on documents.

I realize each user device can be set to default to BW/grayscale, but in my house, that's a lot of devices and would prefer a printer setting instead.

Hi @HannahDad,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Unfortunately, the HP Color LaserJet MFP M283fdw does not have a built-in printer-side setting (in the control panel or Embedded Web Server) to force grayscale or B&W as the global default for all print jobs.

But don't worry — there's a workaround that can get you 90% of the way there using the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS).

1. Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to Create a Custom Preset

This won't globally force grayscale from the printer side, but it can be pushed to specific users or used in print policies (for business networks). Here's how to access the settings:

  1. Get your printer’s IP address:
    • On the printer, tap Settings > Network > Ethernet or Wi-Fi > View Details
    • Note the IP (e.g., 192.168.1.112)
  2. Enter the IP in a browser on your computer to open the EWS (Embedded Web Server).
  3. Log in as admin if prompted (default password may be blank or "admin" — or check printer documentation).
  4. Navigate to:
    • Settings > Print > Printing Preferences (or General Printing Defaults depending on firmware version)
    • Unfortunately, there is no specific grayscale-only default toggle on the printer itself.

2. Alternative: Use a "Grayscale-Only" Print Queue

Here’s the most reliable workaround:

  1. On each Windows computer:
    • Go to Devices and Printers
    • Right-click the M283fdw > Printer Properties
    • Click "Add a new printer" using the same driver, but name it “M283fdw – Black & White”
  2. For the new printer:
    • Go to Printing Preferences
    • Under Color, set to “Black & White” or “Grayscale”
    • Set this new printer as the default

That way, you print in black-and-white by default, and only switch to the color queue when needed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
