trouble installing new HP 5101 AIO printer with USB cable via HP smart app

I prefer not to use wireless. I updated Windows, then plugged in a new USB cable and opened HP Smart app which did locate my new printer [HP 5101 AIO].

     But the installation stalled; screen showed only "Finish set up" but it would not.  Oddly, the Windows list of printers and the HP Print and Scan Doctor app showed printer was installed.  I tried using the HP Smart app controls to scan, print reports, etc. and it worked for 1 hour.  But then the printer no longer was even partly installed on HP Smart. 

        I closed HP smart, uninstalled it and reinstalled it and now I cannot add (+) the printer since it does not appear in list of 'available' printers. 

        I AM able to print Microsoft Word documents directly from that application, so I don't want to totally uninstall the printer in the computer as some instructions say in how to "start all over".   But without HP Smart, I cannot scan.

QUESTION:  could HP Easy Start (full drivers installation) work better for a new HP 5101 that I want to hook up with a USB cable?   Help!

If you want to install scan use the next software:

Once you install search for HP SCAN and scan your document.
