Hi @Contessa2
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
It’s frustrating when a printer suddenly stops working for specific tasks, especially when it used to print everything just fine. Since your older computer is struggling to print Word documents via HP Smart, here are some troubleshooting steps to try:
Step 1: Restart Everything
- Power cycle the printer – Turn it off, unplug it for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
- Restart your computer – A fresh reboot can clear software conflicts.
- Restart your router – If the printer is connected via Wi-Fi, a network reset might help.
Step 2: Check Printer Connection
- Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers.
- Find your printer and check if it shows "Offline" or "Idle".
- If it’s offline, remove the printer (- button) and re-add it (+ button).
Step 3: Clear the Print Queue
- Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers.
- Click See What’s Printing and cancel any stuck jobs.
Step 4: Reinstall Printer Drivers
- Download the latest drivers from HP’s support page.
- Install the drivers and restart your computer.
Step 5: Try Printing from Another App
- Open Notepad or TextEdit and type a few words.
- Click File → Print and select your printer.
- If it prints, the issue may be with Microsoft Word rather than the printer.
