I cannot print from my laptop or from my phone. I went through the HP Smart App to try to print after being unable to print from my Chrome browser, from Adobe reader, or from my iPhone. Through the HP Smart App on my laptop, I got this error: "Your printer has experienced an unexpected configuration problem. 0x80004005"

The "chat bot" was no help whatsoever.

Hi @CynKenn

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I’m sorry you’re running into the “Unexpected configuration problem – 0x80004005” error. I know how frustrating it is when printing suddenly stops working while scanning still works.

Let’s try a few steps to get this fixed:

Confirm Your Printer Model

So we can provide the correct steps, could you please share the exact HP printer model number (e.g., DeskJet, Envy, OfficeJet, LaserJet + model)?

While you share that, here are the most effective fixes:

Remove & Reinstall the Printer (Windows)

Reset the Print Spooler (common fix for 0x80004005)

  • Press Windows + R
  • Type: services.msc
  • Find Print Spooler → Right-click → Stop
  • Go to: C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS
  • Delete all files inside (do NOT delete the folder)

Go back to Services → Start the Print Spooler
Run the Windows Printer Troubleshooter

  • Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters

Run Printer
Update HP app & Printer Drivers

  • Sometimes, outdated firmware or drivers cause this error.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.

Now i am getting the 0x000003e3 error (again).  This has been going on for long time. Spent hours last nite (and this morning) doing all the recommended shutdowns, remove, install, delete, restarts etc. and still getting this "0x000003e3 thread exit or application request". HP Smart App has been no help either using "Diagnose and Fix".
