HP ENVY 4522 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Really don't do much printing in color, did print okay in color from hp smart about 2 months ago. Have cleaned and tested the printer and color is okay, the problem is when I try to print a pdf or picture is only coming out in color. When I try to change it before printing from monochrome to color it says color but only prints in monochrome

@howardhome, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP Envy 4522 Monochrome Printing Issue!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with your printer only producing monochrome prints despite selecting color. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Check Printer Settings:

  • Ensure that the printer settings in the HP Smart application or another printing application are set to print in color. Sometimes, settings default to monochrome without notice.

Printer Driver Settings:

  • Check the printer driver settings on your computer:
    • Go to Devices and Printers in Control Panel (Windows) or Printers & Scanners in System Preferences (Mac).
    • Right-click on the HP Envy 4522 and select Printing Preferences.
    • Ensure that color printing is selected rather than monochrome.

HP Smart App Settings:

  • In the HP Smart app, verify the print settings before sending the job to ensure color is selected and not grayscale or black and white.

Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  • Uninstall the existing printer drivers and reinstall them. Sometimes a fresh installation can resolve configuration issues:

Firmware Update:

  • Check if there's a firmware update available for your printer. An outdated firmware could cause printing issues.

Other Software:

  • If printing from a specific pdf or image viewer results in monochrome prints, try using a different software to print. For instance, using Adobe Reader for PDFs might provide a different result.

Factory Reset:

  • As a last resort, you might consider performing a factory reset on your printer. This will revert the printer to its original settings.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
