I understand that the oprinter uses some ink color when printing in black. Does this happen in every print or only when grascale mode is selected?

If the original is black (e.g a Word document), and I do not change the default settings of the printer, will the HP printer use ink from the color cartridge?
The answer is most likely Yes
What?
The default settings are likely using a standard color / black combination - a black composite - to print the document.
The exact configuration, choices, and setup depend on the Printer model, the Operating System / version, and the Software / Application used to open, view, and submit the job to the printer.

As you know, we mix 3 prime colors at a right amount we can get all colors from black to white (normally we use over 16 million is the number). Printers do the same to print. Technology allows few more colors to help printers to do their job.
Back to your question: some printers (including HP printers) allow users to print black ink only (or Grayscale off). In this case, printer won't use color inks.
Hope this makes sense.
Regards.
