I bought the OfficeJet Pro 8740 3 weeks ago. It came with 2 CDs. One was the installation software, the other was Readiris Pro 14.
From checking online, I see that it is an OCR software. But nowhere in the box or on the HP site do I see anything about this software. I refrain from installing software without knowing more about it. Such as, is the real thing or a stripped down version? Will it run only for a while, then you have to pay for it? How well does it work with the 8740? Will installing it mess with the 8740's software?
I suggest including something about this software in the box!
I tried going to their web site, irisusa.com, but it won't come up!
I don't have a strong need for OCR software, but hey, I'd like to know more about it- it's good and bad attributes.

Hi Joe,
The printer ships with a single IRIS Pro OCR license, activated automatically once installing the 3rd party software with the HP Full Feature Software already installed on your computer.
The licence is for a single computer, it is a full license for use as long as you use the specific HP printer, it is not limited by time or required any licence purchase in the future.
The only need to upgrade for a cost would be a if supported printer is no longer used, if you would like to upgrade to Read IRIS Corporate edition or to a newer Read IRIS version:

Your licence is identical to a purchased license of Read IRIS Pro:

OCR stands for optical character recognition with that software you can convert images to an editable text document.
Let's say you found some old documents that were written on typewriter like 50 years ago. If you scan that documents with OCR software the OCR will recognise all letters and signs and convert them to an editable text document ( like Microsoft word) so you can edit them if you want or do something with it.

Valsimot,
I know what OCR software is- but I wish HP would say more about this particular item- that is, what my questions were about. I've installed enough bogus software over the years, I'm hesitant to install it until I find out more. The fact that their web site doesn't come up- makes me wonder.
