You are welcome.
Final, final...
Does seem like the specs hint that A5 duplex should work on plain paper. ? Rats.
Try printing in Booklet format on regular size paper - Still have to cut the pages if you don't want the pages in an actual booklet format -- it might do until you can find another way.
Booklet is a bit more straight forward if you are printing in Portrait -- it can be done in Landscape.
General Example - Adobe Reader DC - Booklet

General Example - Word - Booklet Format - FYI only

Generally, the conflict will try to indicate the source of the issue.
With the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software installed, at the least, I would have guessed that booklet printing is supported on plain paper, full size (A4 / Letter). Does not seem to make sense but I cannot test it for you (different printers).
Reminder to those reading...
Change in Paper Size
When you are testing / printing a different paper size (for example, to test booklet printing),
Alert the printer to the change in paper size.
Example - Paper Size & Type - Select / modify / check - Tray and Paper

=======================================================
IF you have access to the HP Smart Printing driver,
and if the issue can be detected,
The job configuration, will allow -- or not allow -- the settings to be matched to paper size, type, and other settings.
Regardless,
HP Smart Printing does not magically support options not already supported by your printer -- it can eliminate unknown conflicts since the driver is smart enough to prevent selecting options that are not allowed in combination with other settings.

Unfortunately,
I am out of ideas, I think.

Excellent - makes sense.
Thanks for posting back!
For those reading:
HP Smart Printing
When it is supported by the printer - HP Smart Printing is installed with HP Smart but is separate from the HP Smart application.
HP Smart Printing is supported in Windows.
At this writing, HP Smart Printing is not supported in Mobile Printing applications.
Yes, HP is fond of the "Smart" naming convention.
For example,
- HP Smart is a printing and scanning application that supports PDF and Photo (Image) formats.
- Word is a program / software (a sub-set of the full Microsoft Office suite of software). Word used to create documents -- with the full driver printer software installed, Word can be used to print those documents.
- Adobe Reader DC is a program / software that manages PDF documents -- with the full driver printer software installed, Reader DC can be used to print PDF documents.
- Full Feature Software (Full Solution) is a full driver printing software that installs under the printer's model name. The full driver printing software supports printing from a variety of applications and software programs used to create and manage documents, PDF files, and Image files. The full driver printer software provides access to the full range of the printer's features, including Printing Preferences, scan and print job management, and Printer Properties.
- HP Smart Printing is a print driver / print queue manager that installs with HP Smart (where supported). HP Smart Printing is used with both applications and software to configure print jobs submitted to your printer(s).
- HP Smart (formally HP Connected) is used to add and manage your Printer's email account.
HP Smart Printing is a driver that can be used with applications (for example, HP Smart) and document software (for example Word, and Adobe Reader DC).
The HP Smart Printing driver is selected as would any other queue / driver.
HP Smart Printing supports selecting the printer to use with HP Smart Printing, preselecting job preferences (Printing Preferences), and custom Presets (Shortcuts).
Reminder:
- When called from within printing software / applications, Printing Preferences might be called "Printer Properties" / "Shortcuts" / “More Settings” / “Properties” / "Printer Setup" / "Presets" or similar.
The HP Smart Printing driver helps eliminate conflicts by automatically disallowing unsupported combinations during job configuration.
Important: Different printers support different features.
For example, HP Smart Printing checks the selected Printer (hardware), the other settings, and restricts duplex printing to particular paper sizes and types.
