HP DeskJet Plus 4155 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I print 5x7 photos on my 4155 all-in-one using a wireless connection, there is always a wider white border at the bottom of the printed photo than the other three sides.  I have formatted the phots as 5x7 using Microsoft Office Picture Manager and also tried to manually reformat the photos with a narrow bottom  border, but the print still has a wide white border at the bottom.  I don't get any error message and software and drivers are all current.

Is there a printer setting I'm missing?  I've tried quite a few things and used up a lot of photo paper to no avail.

Is there a photo program that doesn't do this?  Anything else . . .?

I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me regarding this problem.

Hopefully, someone has experienced the same thing and has a solution.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

It's the printer -- This Desktop series shares the following limitations:

The printer does not support borderless

and

The printer requires a larger margin along the bottom edge.

Borderless PrintingNo
Print Margin Bottom (A4)12.7 mm
Print Margin Left (A4)3 mm
Print Margin Right (A4)3 mm
Print Margin Top (A4)3 mm

If you are using printer software that includes margin control,

Set all margins no less than 1/2 inch (12.7 mm)

I've never used the Microsoft Office Picture Manager.

I do not have any context for its use.

If there is a solution to the uneven margins, it likely includes having installed the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.

Windows Photos

Easy and quick...

Might work if the software / app is smart enough to even out the margins...

HP Smart - Windows - Application

HP Smart - Windows - backed up with the installation of the full driver printer software - might be able to center the photo onto the paper.

On the main menu

Use the "Crop" Scaling option to "match" the shape of the photo to the shape of the paper.

What?

Shrink to Fit can result in uneven borders when the shape of the photo does not match the shape of the paper

In More Settings

Select Shortcut "Photo Printing with white borders"  (if / as available)

Switch OFF the option for Borderless printing

General Example - HP Smart - Windows - 5x7 inch

Reminder:  Switch OFF Borderless on a printer that does not support the option.

Microsoft Paint

Paint (mspaint) can be used to print photos

I've not looked at this example for a while -- I think the "newer" Paint still works the same way or similarly.

In my opinion

This software will do pretty much what you tell it to do.

The basics are simple -- it goes uphill from there, of course - the more complicated the task, the more steps to make it happen.

The help files are decent and there is help from the website, too.

It seems it's the printer.  I've tried four software options and I still get the wider bottom border.

I'm guessing it has to do with the mechanics of the printer.  I have an older Epson Workforce printer that worked so I'll replace the print head and use that one for  photo printing.

Thank you again for your help with this.

@Industryman

You are welcome.

I was thinking that creating a border no less than 1/2 inch all around would work to accommodate that bottom edge.

Seems odd to me.

I think I am perhaps missing something.

@greenturtle

Words of Wisdom?

What's the deal with that bottom border on the DeskJet?

I realize it has to be larger (12.7 mm) -- but why is the photo unable to be centered with larger borders on all sides?

Thanks.

Hi @Dragon-Fur

This got me stumped too.  This could be a firmware software interaction.

@Industryman

If you're using an Android phone,  can try using Mopria print? (Download from Play Store)

It may or may not solve the problem though.

Thanks

Thanks.

I'm thinking it's the printer and not the software.

But, since I really don't know, I'll try the Mopria print app. . . . but I'm running out of printer paper!

I'll post the results but it may be a while.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

Thank you @Industryman  for helping us to test and validate.

Here's a resource on Mopria Print that might helpful (not exactly on photo print but how to get Mopri app):

Unfortunately, the Mopri app is Android based and I had to add a few programs to my Windows 10 OS computer to get to the Google Play store.  After that, I didn't have any luck using the app.  On my phone (a Samsung S20 5G android) the remote print function still had the same bottom wide white space as when I printed directly from the computer.  Both are wireless connections.  There are likely programs that allow manual setting of margins for a photo print, but I haven't been successful using any of them.

I don't know how much help I could be as a part of the printer program, but I'll give it a try if it helps others.  Because of HP's proprietary interfaces with printers,  I would hope, at some point they would get involved to advise printer capabilities re: printing issues, but don't know how much message streams like this one are monitored by HP.

For now, what does my involvement in the forum you mentioned entail?

Thanks
