My windows 11 laptop shows the following error in windows update

HP - Printer - 61.2509.0.200

Install error - 0x800f020b

I have uninstalled HP smart and reinstalled but the error remains.

I have searched the update which refers to a windows 8 update? Any advice on how to remove the error is appreciated.

The Windows Updates Troubleshooter did not work for me as it kept crashing.

I have removed a previous windows update which seems to have resolved the issue.

Hi @peterh36,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

we understand how frustrating it is to see HP - Printer - 61.2509.0.200 Install error - 0x800f020b in Windows Update, especially after reinstalling HP Smart and checking everything.

Steps to Fix the Issue

1. Hide or Block the Update

Use Microsoft’s official tool to prevent Windows from reinstalling the problematic update:

  • Download Show or Hide Updates Troubleshooter from Microsoft: 👉 Hide Windows Updates
  • Run the tool → select the HP Printer update → hide it.

2. Remove Pending Update

  • Press Windows + R → type:
  • C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
  • Delete all files in this folder.
  • Restart your PC.

3. Install the Correct HP Driver

  • Go to Official HP® Support.
  • Enter your printer model and download the latest Windows 11 driver.
  • Install manually instead of relying on Windows Update.

4. Optional: Disable Automatic Driver Updates

  • Press Windows + R → type sysdm.cpl.
  • Go to HardwareDevice Installation Settings → select No (your device might not work as expected).
  • This prevents Windows from pushing incompatible drivers.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @peterh36,

Thank you for the update, and we’re glad to hear that removing the previous Windows update resolved the issue.

Sometimes a recently installed Windows update can cause compatibility or performance problems, so rolling it back (as you did) is an effective temporary solution. To help ensure the problem doesn’t return:

  • Pause automatic updates for a short period until Microsoft releases a newer cumulative update.
  • Run Windows Update again after a few days to check for a fixed version.
  • Keep HP Support Assistant and all drivers/firmware up to date, as HP often releases patches that improve compatibility with new Windows builds.

If the issue reappears or you notice any related errors, please share your PC model number and the specific update (KB number) you removed, and we’ll gladly review and advise further.

Thank you for the follow-up. We really appreciate your diligence in troubleshooting!

Take care and have an amazing day!
