Laptop: HP Probook 4540s
Printer: HP P1600
After having used an HP printer at my work and having installed the drivers "HP Smart Install" has been installed as some form of USB Driver(?).
The default double-click option for any mass storage device that is inserted into a USB port is now "HP Smart Install". I cannot remove this feature.
I have removed all drivers for the USB via the device manager - this has not fixed the issue.
I have reformatted the USB stick (was empty in the first place - no autoplay files) - no fix.
I have returned all autoplay options for media to default - no fix.
I have used SIUtility.exe from the HP Printer drivers and have used PC>Disable HP Smart Install - no fix.
I have fully uninstalled all HP printer drivers from the computer - no fix.
This is a screenshot of the feature I am attemping to remove - http://i.imgur.com/v1IcdZ0.png
Can you please advise how to fully remove this feature such that the default double-click for a storage device is to "explore".

Hi AngusMac,
Sorry that there wasn't a option to disable the Smart Install from the EWS.
I have been checking into this.
Make sure you are running the uninstall from the CD or Program files.
This way it should remove all the registry files.
Make sure the printer's USB cable is disconnected.
Here are the steps to run the uninstall from the computer or the CD.
To uninstall from program files:
Go start and select computer.
Select the C drive.
Select program files or program files x86.
Open the HP and printer name folder.
Select uninstall.
Uninstall From CD:
Go start, computer, right click on the CD for the printer, left click open in a new window, double click on uninstall.
Remove the drivers from server properties if they are still listed.
Go to start, devices and printers.
Highlight any printer.
Choose print server properties across the top.
Click on the drivers tab at the top of print server properties window.
Choose the printer you want to uninstall and click remove.
The next screen will give a warning, letting you know that deleting the driver package will remove it from the system. Click yes to say that you are sure you want to do this.
Then in the devices and printers window, right click your printer and remove device if the printer is still listed.
If the printer is listed still in device manager or the registry we would have to delete it there also.
Keep me posted.

Hi AngusMac,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand you would like to disable the Smart Install for the printer.
I will be happy to help you.
Follow these steps to disable the Smart Install. Select printer not PC.
On the Windows computer, go to start, computer, right click the CD for the
printer and left click open in new window, go to util/siutility.exe/HP smart install utility.
Shows printer or PC - select printer.
Then click disable.
Hope this helps.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.
Have a nice day!

Hi AngusMac,
That is really odd, never had this issue before.
I would restore the printers default settings. Restore factory settings.
Then go back in and try and disable to the Smart Install.
I believe it has to be connected by USB to disable it.
If that doesn't work you can update the printer's firmware to see if that will resolve the issue.
HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads. Select your operating system, click next, and click the link for firmware.
Let me know if that helped.
Is the printer setup by USB or Ethernet connection?
Thank You.

Hi again,
I have reset the printer to default settings, then disbaled HP SI via SIUtility.exe - no luck - and updated the firmware to the latest version - also no luck.
The printer is connected to my laptop via USB.
Will I be required to restart my computer to see any effects take place?

Hi AngusMac,
Yes, I would restart the computer to see if it worked properly.
There is one more thing we can try. I checked into it and you can also disable the Smart Install from the EWS.
Setup the printer by Ethernet connection.
Print off a configuration page to get the printer's IP address.
Then type the IP address in a web browser to bring up the printer's Embedded Web Server and you should be able to disable the Smart Install through here.
Let me know how you made out.
Thank You.

Hi Gemini2,
I have gone to the EWS for the printer but the only option for HP Smart Install is "download". I cannot see any options to disable from the EWS. I did use the download and then checked with SIUtility.exe and both PC and printer HP Smart Install were disbled but the problem still persists.
I have also been restarting after each change made but no luck.
It is unlikely that I will need to use this printer again. Is there some way of completely removing HP Smart Install from my laptop rather than disabling it? I have uninstalled the printer a couple of times now but this does not remove HP Smart Install.
Thanks

Hi Gemini2,
Thanks for all your help,
It looks like uninstalling all of the software for the printer has fixed the issue - I tried this before with no fix so perhaps the alterations made during your help have solved this.
Thank you again!
