Product: HP Photosmart 5524
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have worked on this problem for hours and tried EVERYTHING to no avail:

  • uninstall and reinstall software (HP Smart),
  • turn off and on PC, printer and wifi router
  • check IP address via browsers (chrome and IE), which it never sees
  • printer status always says its on same wifi network as pc
  • I restored the printer to factory settings and re-connected it to the wifi....still invisible.
  • checked other PCs in the house....no one can see the printer
  • (seriously....the CIA should consider investing in my printer).

HELP!

Update: Wireless Direct printing is working so this proves the printer is connected to the wifi.  It is just a hassle to use because it requires me to:

 - disconnect PC from the wifi

- connect PC wirelessly to printer via Wireless Direct

-print

- then reconnect to wifi to continue with work

Update:

- I deleted "HP Smart" app and installed the software recommended for my printer by https://123.hp.com, which turned out to be "HP Photosmart 5520 series - HP Printer Assistant"

- I unplugged the wifi router and printer for 10 minutes

- PC, Control Panel, Add Printer is still unable to find my invisible printer  (meaning Microsoft and HP aren't getting along I guess)

- However, the new software found it and it's printing fine!!!

 

I'm not sure what fixed it but OMG what an ordeal!!
