Problems subsequent to windows10 1709 update:

1. Lost printer setting defaults. Can save new printer shortcuts but then will not save as default. Have tried both in HP solution centre - settings- printer settings and via run: shell:PrintersFolder - prniter icon and preferences -select-apply/ok.

2. Main problem (I can live with inconvience of 1. above) is I can't now print e-mails from outlook, printer just responds to print with 'bing, bing bing' and no print. My work round is to copy and paste e-mail content to word and then print with no problem,  Suggestions please.

Hi @sebring10,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I understand you are having issues while printing from your HP Photosmart printer after the recent windows update. Don't worry I'll do my best to help you with this.

Let’s try to fix this issue by doing a clean install. Follow the steps mentioned below:

· First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.

· Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Photosmart printer entries and uninstall them.

· Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.

· Restart your computer.

· Click the bottom-left Start button on desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.

· Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.

· Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Printer” – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device un-install pop-up, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device".

· Also, check the entries under "printer queue" and "imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says, “Unknown device”.

· Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.

· Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.

· Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

· Once done you can try cleaning out your temporary files and cached files. You can try using automated applications like some cleaner software's that you can download from the internet.

· Now restart your computer again.

· Open the Run window again, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.

· Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.

· Now scroll up and go to “Function Discovery Provider Host” – right-click and select properties – Change the startup type to “manual” and start the service.

· Repeat the same exercise on “Function Discovery Resource Publication” as well.

· Click on   http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL30130/mp-109997-3/PS_AIO_04_C4500_USW_Full_Win_WW_140_40...  and install the software.

This worked, some head scratching. During the uninstall a 'windows stopped working' appears but closing the message reveals restart message. Entries under device manager "print queue"  (not printer queue). Under print server properties - drivers gives options of either driver or driver package when removing, also 'microsoft enhance print x64' and another won't remove although a number of entries were removed.

Many thanks for your assistance and hope it is of help to others.

I think I have the same problem with my HP All-in-one PhotoSmart Printer, 4599.  This printer can be used either with USB or via WI-FI. After the Window 10 1709 update, my printer stopped working for both USB and WI-FI.  My wife's computer still works via WI-FI though but she hasn't done the Win 10 update yet.  The only way I can print right now is sending my files to her and she prints through her computer and WI-FI.

However, I am able to command a SCAN from my computer and the printer/scanner scans a page of text just fine and sends it back to my computer.

One thing I noticed is that when I send out a print command, nothing goes to the print queue at all.  Also, there is no errors at all. It just doesn't print.

It is great that there does seem to be a fix by uninstalling the old drivers and doing what was said.  Will this work for me as well or is there some other fix I could try first based upon any other information I have provided here?

Also, will my wife have to do the same with her computer to fix it assuming we load the Win 10 1709 update? I hate to do anything with that computer until I have mine up and printing again.

Any help from those who are listening would be appreciated.

Thanks, your fix did work for me as well for my 4599 printer. I see that the driver used was the latest driver so I assume the issue was we just that we needed to clear out everything by removing all trace of any drivers first before loading the latest driver again.  I appreciate the help you gave me and the previous fellow to get our printers back working.  Sorry it took me so long to get back to you (holidays you know).

On similar subject, my wife still has not updated to the latest Win 10 (release 1079) on her computer.  She does not use our printer via USB though. She goes wireless using WI-FI. Will she have the same issue and have to go through the same steps as me in order to get printing again once we update her to the latest Win 10?

My wish would be that HP would support software printer updates or fixes directly rather than the forum method.  The forum method does work but it is a littler tough for some of us to use this method.  My printer is over six years old and it keeps on printing. I love HP printers and always have. I understand when our warranty is out we can't expect the same kind of service especially for the hardware. I also understand that we can pay more dollars to extend the warranty, etc. But software in my mind is a different then hardware.  I think the general consensus is that HP or any printer manufacturer doesn't make much money selling the hardware.  Where HP makes most of their money is on the printer ink.  I probably have spent well over a thousand dollars on ink since I have had this printer and probably spent around $100 for the printer initially.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to determine that HP or any other printer manufacturer should bend over backwards to make sure the software for their printers works and keeps working without much input from the user. In other words, make it as automatic as possible.  Most of the troubles I have had with this printer have come right after a OS update from Microsoft. Usually, it is the wireless computer that doesn't work with the printer after an update.  And it takes some time to figure out why and usually I have to ask for help from HP or a forum to get it printing.  Anyway, maybe this should be a subject for another forum subject (if it isn't already).

I really do appreciate those people working and helping on the forum because without you, we would be buying more printers.  Probably good for HP or, maybe not because some of us would be probably buying other manufacturer's printers instead of HP.  Just think about how many potential $ in ink revenue that might be lost. Some thoughts to ponder.

Thanks to all,

Dave

It worked!   Both printers (HP LaserJet 1040 and HP Photosmart C6300) were reinstalled and work.  Thank you!

After updating windows 10 (dec 2107) may laserjet p1005 stop working.

Used the procedure detailed by "
