I have tried every possible troubleshooting option and reset connection option for getting this printer to connect. It was working fine, then our modem died, and it does not like the new modem. The PC is connected with ethernet cables. I often print from my phone as well.
The Wifi on the printer reads as online and connected to the same network as the PC and mobile. HP Smart says the printer is offline.
Any solution would be appreciated. I've tried all HP's recommended "advanced" settings checks to no avail.

Hi @Brittany44T,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you're having with your HP 8020e printer. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:
1. Restart Devices
- Turn off the printer, your modem, and the PC. Wait about 60 seconds, then turn them back on in this order: modem, printer, PC.
2. Check Network Connection
- Ensure the printer is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network. You can usually check this on the printer’s control panel under the network settings.
3. Update Printer Firmware
- Use the HP Smart app or the HP website to check for any firmware updates for your printer.
4. Reinstall Printer in HP Smart
- In the HP Smart app, remove the printer and then add it again. This can sometimes resolve connectivity issues.
5. Check Windows Printer Settings
- On your PC, go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners. Make sure your printer is set as the default printer and is not listed as offline.
6. Use IP Address for Connection
- Find the printer's IP address (usually found in the printer's network settings) and add it manually:
- In Control Panel, go to Devices and Printers.
- Click Add a printer, then select The printer that I want isn't listed.
- Choose Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname, and enter the printer's IP address.
7. Disable VPN or Firewall Temporarily
- If you’re using a VPN or have a firewall enabled, try disabling it temporarily to see if it’s blocking the connection.
8. Factory Reset the Printer
- If nothing else works, consider performing a factory reset on the printer to restore default settings. Refer to the printer manual for specific steps
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
