Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

I have two identical laptops identically configured with software.

On one the name of the printer created by the driver installer is HP Photosmart C4780 and it appears in Device Manager. On the other the name has the three TMP00 attached and it does not appear in Device Manager.

Both print via USB.

Does not make sense.

Rename the printer if you would like

Right-click on the printer and select printer properties. under the general tab Rename the printer. Click on Apply and ok

Alternatively, you may try reinstalling the printer driver. Install the printer using Windows built-in driver

Refer to this document to know how. Try printing. Use Deskjet 990c driver if your printer is not listed.

Refer to this document HP printer setup (Windows built-in driver) for help.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

I have no idea how to rename the printer.  But because it does not show in device manager I suspect the install was flawed, which might also explain the strange name.

I am reluctant to substitute MS and other printer drivers as they may not take full advantage of the printer.

I have reinstalled the software at least twice and it produced the same result. I will try one more time and if the same happens I'll check the other options.

I will report here.

Which software are you referring to that you have reinstalled?

There is no software available for this model printer as I mentioned before.

The only option is to use the Windows built-in driver. If you do not wish to use that, there is no other option.

Use the printer using a USB cable or upgrade the printer.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

I have the last version of the HP driver software for this printer that I had downloaded when it was still available.

Over time I installed and re-installed it a few times because it has always been problematic -- sometimes failing to complete on first try and leaving leftovers after uninstallation. All my printers were HP and with so much printer expertise I expected better quality software.

But the printer is fine and I see no reason to spend money on a new one. Yes, I do print via USB because, as I initially reported, the printer is not compatible with the WPA2 of the Comcast network. But as I said, there seems to be something wrong with the driver re-install on one laptop, and since on the other identical one is OK, I intend to try another uninstall/re-install and see if this time it will complete correctly.

Sure, you may try the reinstallation and check if that helps. There is no other option to resolve this issue.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the last version of the driver that was downloaded from the HP support site.

I configured it for USB as it does not work wireless with the WPA2 of the Comcast network.

It works and it now appears in Device Manager, but it still added those weird 3 TMP00 to the name -- I wish somebody in the know would tell me why. You said that it is possible to rename -- can you tell me how?

Thanks.

Glad to know that the printer is working now. To rename the printer,

  • Go to Control panel > Devices and printers > Select the printer > Right-click > Printer properties
  • Under the general tab Rename the printer as required.
  • (You may also go to Change properties and rename it form there)
  • Click on Apply and ok.

Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

Have a great day!

Nope -- Properties does not permit name change (see attached)

Note also the 'Unavailable' fields.

Turns out that I have to reboot the computer to have it recognize the printer and Troubleshoot option says it's not

the default printer when it is.printer.png

The driver is not installed properly or has bugs. Hence, these issues.

The last resort is to install the printer using a built-in driver which you said did not work.

So, you will have to upgrade the printer I'm afraid as we have tried all the possible steps.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.
